Prepper Radio

PrepperRadio is a remote communication project designed for emergency management from a prepper’s perspective. This includes the development of the PrepperRadio firmware, which modifies the ergonomics and functionality of two-way radios, simplifying them for those with little experience and incorporating features more similar to a telephone. PrepperDock, an open-source computer application that interfaces with PrepperRadio.

This firmware can currently only be installed on QuanSheng radios K1, K5v3 and the previous ones K5 (8), K6, 5R Plus, 99, (88).

1.3 PrepperDock

The PrepperRadio firmware is installed via the PrepperDock app.
It runs on Windows, Linux and Mac.

This software allows you to manage the entire radio, flash the firmware, adjust settings, change channels and save the configuration and calibration data stored in the EEPROM. In fact, it is strongly recommended that you do this in the event of a reset.

To connect the radio to PrepperDock, you need a cavo USB tipo Kenwood.

3. Reminder

This guide is a very condensed version of the PrepperRadio user manual. It is useful for those who have already read the full user manual in PDF format.

Main screen

– SCANNY – SPECRTUM –

Keys	Function
*F + ️⃣Scan**	→ Opens the SCANNY function.
F + VFO/MR	→ Interchange memory or VFO modes.
8 R	→ Change resume type.
˄ ˅	→ Increases or decreases the RSSI.
5	→ Monitor
0 FM	→ Excludes a channel or frequency (X).
F + ˄ ˅	→ Change the scan direction.
F + 4 FC	→ Fast Copy function.
M / MENU	→ Scan pause. PAUSE mode:
˄ ˅	→ Manually switch between frequencies.
PTT	→ Copy the frequency to the main screen.
*️⃣Scan	→ Switch between Spectrum and Scanny.

– MESSAGY –

Keys	Function
F + M	→ Opens the MESSAGY function.
˅	→ Scroll through the 3 pages.
˄	→ Copy the previous messages.
˄	→ Message selection.
*️⃣	→ Change the font type.
M / MENU	→ Replies to the selected message. Sends the message you have written.
M / MENU + *️⃣	→ Change the settings

The alphabet is laid out across the keys as follows:

– CONTACTS – ( Selective Call )

Keys	Function
F + 9 Call	→ Go to CONTACTS.
PTT	→ To make a selective call to a single user.
9Call	→ To make a selective group call.
M / MENU + *️⃣	→ Change the settings
My ID	Maximum 10 digits. From 0 to 9. (0 = unreachable. If there are 10 digits, the first digit must not be greater than 3)

Function of short-press keys

Keys	Function
M / MENU	→ Access radio menus. Modify and Memorize settings. In SCANNY = Pause. In MESSAGY sends message.
EXIT	→ Goes back through the menus. Stops scanning and FM radio.
*️⃣Scan	→ Activates the string for entering a DTMF sequence. Changes the character in write mode.
F#	→ Activates the secondary functions of the keys. EXIT to clear it.

Function of long-press keys

Keys	Function
F#	→ Keypad lock. → A padlock appears at the top and the words ‘Long F to unlock’.
L1	→ LED torch. 3 modes: ON, flashing and SOS.
L2	→ BANDWIDTH Adjusts the bandwidth. 25k 12.5k 6.25k

F + M / MENU	→ Activates Messagy. Copy the Messagy ID from Contacs to Messagy. ID: 1 → 254. To 255: send message to everyone.
F + 1Band	→ Built-in Guide, Help (⚠️V3 and K1 only)
F + 2 A/B	→ Interchanges between channel A and channel B.
F + 3 VFO/MR	→ Interchange memory or VFO modes.
F + 4 FC	→ Recalls the Call channel.
F + 5 NOAA	→ Clears selective call information.
F + 6 H/M/L	→ Power selection x p L M H, initials appear below the frequency.
F + 7 VOX	→ Activates or deactivates VOX. A Vx appears below the frequency.
F + 8 R	→ (Reverse) In Duplex, inverts RX and TX freq. An R appears below the frequency.
F + 9 Call	→ Opens the Contact section to make a selective call.
*F + ️⃣ Scan**	→ Opens the Scanny and Spectrum function.
F + 0 FM	→ Radio FM broadcasting.
