The features a good prepper watch should have in case things get tougher.
🔸High contrast between hands and dial, clear characters.
Reading must be comfortable in all lighting conditions and for all levels of visual acuity.
🔸Internal light, backlighting or lume
Do not rely too much on luminescent paint, as it becomes useless after a few hours. You need to be able to read the time in the dark at any hour.
Some watches use tritium tubes: they glow for 25 years without needing batteries or buttons.

The CTL1616 rechargeable battery (and the circuit’s capacitors) are best stored when partially charged (medium indicator).
Store them in a cool place (15–22 °C) with occasional indirect light (for example, on a windowsill or a light shelf). Leaving them in complete darkness for several months causes a deep discharge, which permanently reduces the battery’s capacity. Every 6–12 months, expose them to light for a few hours to keep the battery in good condition.
🔸So there’s no point in always keeping them fully charged or under-charged, or putting them through full discharge-charge cycles.
If you prefer a watch without chips, batteries or circuits, automatic mechanical watches are the ‘forever’ choice. They wind themselves with the movement of your wrist, do not need batteries and, if well made, are also insensitive to magnetic storms and EMP jammers. They last for decades with a simple service every 5-10 years.
