Prepper Radio

PrepperRadio is a remote communication project for emergency management from a prepper perspective. This includes the creation of PrepperRadio firmware that modifies the ergonomics and functionality of transceivers, simplifying them for those who are not familiar with them and implementing functions more similar to a telephone. PrepperDock, an open-source computer software application that interfaces with PrepperRadio.

This firmware can currently only be installed on QuanSheng K1 radios., K5v3 and the previous K5 (8), K6, 5R Plus, 99, (88).

I disclaim all liability in case of transmission outside the bands allowed by the manufacturer. What you do with your radio is at your own risk.
Please note that the use of this radio requires an HAM radio licence.

Everything is legally permitted, there are no encryptions or secrets. The working frequencies are normally for public use. Transmission power is what is provided for the equipment.
What is proposed is to manage possible EMERGENCIES and to save the lives of PEOPLE. Those who are part of the project are committed to respecting and safeguarding PEOPLE, lives and the rules in force regarding the use of radio and legal frequencies in their country. This firmware is not designed as an ordinary PMR446 Walkie-Talkie.

1.3 PrepperDock

The PrepperRadio firmware can be installed via the PrepperDock application.
Runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac.

This software allows you to manage the entire radio, flash the firmware, modify parameters, modify channels, and save the configuration and calibration data contained in the EEPROM. In fact, it is strongly recommended to do so in case of restoration.

To connect the radio to PrepperDock, you need a Kenwood cable type.

3. Reminder

This memo is a very condensed version of the PrepperRadio user manual. It is useful for those who have already read the entire user manual in PDF format.

Main screen

– SCANNY – SPECRTUM –

Key	Function
*F + ️⃣Scan**	→ Access to SCANNY.
F + VFO/MR	→ Switch from Channels mode to Frequencies mode.
8 R	→ Change the type of resume.
˄ ˅	→ Increases or decreases RSSI.
5	→ Monitor
0 FM	→ Excludes a channel or frequency (X).
F + ˄ ˅	→ Change the scanning direction.
F + 4 FC	→ Fast Copy function. (Frequency meter)
M / MENU	→ Scan pause. PAUSE mode:
˄ ˅	→ Manually move between frequencies.
PTT	→ Copy frequency on the main screen.
*️⃣Scan	→ Switch between Spectrum ↔ Scanny.

– MESSAGY –

Key	Function
F + M	→ Access to MESSAGY.
˅	→ Scroll through the 3 pages.
˄	→ Copy previous messages.
˄	→ Message selection.
*️⃣	→ Change the case type.
M / MENU	→ Replies to the selected message. Sends the written message.
M / MENU + *️⃣	→ Modify the Settings

The alphabet is distributed across the keys as follows:

– CONTACTS – ( Selective Call )

Key	Function
F + 9 Call	→ Access to CONTACTS.
PTT	→ To make a selective call to a single user.
9Call	→ To make a selective group call.
M / MENU + *️⃣	→ Modify the Settings
My ID	max 10 digits. From 0 → 9. (0 = unreachable. With 10 digits, the first cannot be >3)

Short-press keys functions.

Key	Function
M / MENU	→ Access to Menu. Modify Memorise Settings. In Scan = Pause. reply and sends Message.
EXIT	→ Back to menus. Stops scanning and FM radio.
*️⃣Scan	→ Activate the string to enter a DTMF sequence. Modify writing and parameters.
F#	→ Activates the secondary functions of the keys. EXIT to disable.

Long-press keys functions.

Key	Function
F#	→ Keyboard lock. → A padlock appears at the top and the message ‘Long F to unlock’ appears.
L1	→ LED torch. 3 modes: ON, flashing and SOS.
L2	→ BANDWIDTH Adjusts the bandwidth. 25k 12.5k 6.25k

Function of keys (F# Activates the secondary functions of the keys.)

Key	Function
F + M / MENU	→ Access to Messagy. Copy the ID from Contacts to Messagy.ID: 1 → 254. To 255: send message to everyone.
F + 1Band	→ Built-in Guide, Help (⚠️V3 and K1 only)
F + 2 A/B	→ Switch between channel A and channel B.
F + 3 VFO/MR	→ Switch between memory and VFO modes.
F + 4 FC	→ Call up the Call Ch. channel.
F + 5 NOAA	→ Clears selective call information.
F + 6 H/M/L	→ Power selection: x p L M H, these initials appear below the frequency.
F + 7 VOX	→ Turn VOX ON or Off. A Vx appears below the frequency.
F + 8 R	→ (Reverse) In Duplex mode, reverses the RX and TX frequencies; an R appears below the frequency.
F + 9 Call	→ Opens the Contacts section for selective calls.
*F + ️⃣ Scan**	→ Opens the Scan and Spectrum function.
F + 0 FM	→ Radio FM broadcasting.
